Billund is a small town in the heart of Jutland in Denmark. It is mainly known for its LEGO factory, the LEGOLAND theme park, and the airport.
LEGOLAND is an amusement park where – as the name already suggests – it's all about LEGO. The attractions – that have not all been made out of LEGO, like the rollercoasters or viewing towers – are mainly geared towards young children (up to 12 years). Adults can gaze at the Mini Land that is entirely made up of LEGO. The original park that was opened in 1968 only consisted of this LEGO Mini Land. Over fifty million LEGO blocks were used to build this miniature city! You can also get busy yourself (as well as your children of course), as there are large boxes with LEGO blocks everywhere. The park is closed from November through March.
Billund is also home of another theme park, Lalandia. This is mainly a water park with swimming pools, slides and other water attractions, but there are also bowling alleys, miniature golf courses, playgrounds and other playing and sporting activities geared towards families with children.
For a different view of LEGOLAND and Billund's surroundings, you can take a sightseeing flight in a Cessna plane. If you want to, this flight can also take you to Givskud Zoo, at about 25 kilometers northeast of Billund. Givskud Zoo is a safari park where you can watch lions, giraffes and gorillas from the car. Some animals are also housed on fenced off parts of land; you can watch them from footpaths that run along these areas.
Billund is located in the center of Jutland and there are therefore many destinations on the Danish mainland that you can easily reach by rental car.
Southwest of Billund lies Denmark's oldest town, Ribe. It's not large, but there is a lot to see. You can for example climb the tower of the cathedral (Ribe Domkirke). There is not much left of the castle (Ribe Slot), but it does give a good impression of the power of this town in the past.
Although quite touristy, it is fun to accompany the night watchman. Between May 1 and September 15, every night at 10 p.m., he walks his round through the narrow streets to announce bedtime is approaching. Along the way, he tells stories about witches, inundations and fires. Exciting, especially for children!
As it was an important town during the Viking Age, you should not miss the VikingeCenter in Ribe. This is again mainly fun for children, as they can participate in Viking games and of course dress up like a real Viking.
Are you getting a little tired of all these activities for children? In this case, we recommend that you visit the largest city on the Danish mainland, Århus, that is nicknamed 'The City of Cafés'. The large student population has definitely played a role here ...
Billund offers numerous accommodations, mainly hotels and resorts associated with LEGOLAND or Lalandia. Other than that you have very little choice, except for some basic guesthouses in the center of Billund. In the surrounding area you can, however, find some campsites and rent attractive Danish country houses and farms.
There are large parking lots near LEGOLAND and Lalandia. In the city itself you will also not have trouble finding a free parking space.
The airport is located only two kilometers northeast of Billund. You can easily reach the airport by rental car via the Lufthavnsvej, which runs like a beltway around Billund and the airport.
